Accidental Rugmaker – Kira Mead

Home » Accidental Rugmaker – Kira Mead

Having found a beautiful brightly coloured Albany Woollen Mills Blanket at the Op-shop, Kira first experimented with Rugmaking. While searching for more blankets at an Op-shop,  Kira was discovered by a member of the Australian Rug Makers Guild and was named the “Accidental Rugmaker” as she wasn’t quite sure what she had made. The official name is Standing Wool Rugs or Quillies depending on which part of the world you are in. Kira has also adapted and developed the art into producing cushions, vessels, necklaces, brooches and Chain Stitch Hooked Rugs.

Kira has demonstrated and exhibited with the Australian Rugmakers Guild and has written articles on Standing Wool and Chain Stitch Hooked Rugs for American based publication “Rughooking Magazine.

Having taught Standing Wool Rugs at the 2016 Albany Summer School, Kira will be teaching both Standing Wool & Chain Stitch Rug Hooking in January 2017.
